Design 3 Holly Christmas cake

with white fondant icing, green & red holly and berries and a little gold Christmas tree

Label on back of jam & chutney

My parents were born during the Second World War and come from generation who vividly remember post war 'rationing'. Mum remembers getting a 2 oz ration of butter a week, 4 oz of sweets and sharing one boiled egg a week with her brother. Mum remembers aged five, her Naval father returning from escorting the North Atlantic Convey, with a previously unheard of box of cornflakes, a bunch of bananas and a bottle of tomato ketchup. She has never eaten a banana since, unlike my Dad who likes tomato ketchup with everything.
Dad remembers all the lawns being turned into fields of potatoes and fruit trees and Granny cooking boiled nettles with everything. He is not very enthusiastic about anything 'green' today and I have to tell my protesting children that when you are as old as Grandaddy you don't have to eat your greens either.
As children we were commandeered in the Autumn, to pick tubs full of blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries and redcurrants, buckets full of apples and pears which Mum then made into rows of jars of jam and chutney which we would eat our way through until the following Autumn. Just when she thought she could put her feet up, I've persuaded her to go back in the kitchen and remake her jams because they are just so much tastier than anything you can buy in supermarkets. I think it is because she uses more fruit, fresh from the garden and because she doesn't add any strange preservatives or colouring.
